At long last, the Beta 2 of Cartovore 2 is available. It's available from the main Cartovore 2 page:

http://www.darklands.cx/~duam9/cartovore2.htm

A lot of things changed in the time between beta 1 and beta 2, so you'll probably want to uninstall the original if you still have it (your characters wouldn't work anymore anyway--sorry about that part).

This is still a beta, and while it's a leap ahead of beta 1, it's still a nascent game, so there will be more before I decide it's finished. Feedback is also a good thing.

According to my project plan, Beta 2 is the card engine milestone. There is one other change I want to make, but it's a change that might break the game in several places that won't necessarily be easy to spot, so I figured I'd upload this (mostly) stable version before I did it.

There's several directions the game can take after that. I have a few other milestones I've put down which are mostly optional, but would enhance the game quite a bit I think (and wouldn't take as long as the game has to this point).

However, the game has already surpassed what I had originally planned for it, and some folks are clamoring for VRPG 2 (or an ending to the Shells story). For my part I'm undecided. Knowing what everybody wants will help me decide where to go from here (hence the poll). Keep in mind, though--each Cartovore 2 milestone will probably take me a month or two, whereas VRPG 2 will probably take 6 months before there's even an alpha, and as many as 2 years for a full release.

Please feel free to post any other thoughts you have, and, of course, any bugs you find.

I'm psyched about this release, it's a huge step forward from the initial beta. You managed to not only make it much deeper gameplay, but also kept it's grassroots. It still feels the same, but in ways I didn't even imagine you'd go, it's become so much more.

As far as future interests go, I think a mission series would be interesting, but honestly far from necessary, the standalone content is easily sufficient.

A multiplayer option, while interesting, would most likely require a standardization of the game beyond what there is now. Part of what I find so charming is the fact that, if one is so inclined they can go into the .txt files, fiddle with some things, and change things to fit their whim. Be it slight text changes, or adding effects to cards, adding cards themselves. Really part of the fun in your games is feeling that you can make it your own, definitely ups the fun to be had. But back on track, were there a multiplayer option it would mean that you would need to standardize the game and set it in stone, which would definitely draw from the game's flavor.

As for the starter decks, it would be most intriguing, with a plethora of new cards, new archetypes, and new abilities to behold, you really couldn't go wrong with some new starter decks. Along those lines, the new cards added in this update are undeniably fun to use, I'm positive that new cards in any form or function could serve to really bring the game to life even more.

As for other projects (VRPG 2 and Shells namely) I'm not one to tell you what to do, but I'd suggest sticking to cartovore 2 until you feel that you've done enough with it to be satisfied, lest you be drawn back to it consistently. I for one hate nothing more then that incomplete feeling I get when I know I've not done all I could on a pet project of mine.

That about wraps it up, I'll be sure to bring any bugs I find to your attention here, maybe get some life flowing in these forums.

If you want to change your cards, add the "NOMRP" trait to them. That will instruct the engine not to look for updated versions in the main card file.

Alternately, you can change them in "StartingSet.txt", which will change them everywhere in the game (including for your opponents).

I've played the new version and I like the new system and cards. I've played a few rounds and it was very fun.

Unfortunately I've also found some bugs:
I don't remember where and when it was, but once when I played with the Gurglemeister starter set (against a Girlyburp I think) I saw the text "LASTVAL" instead of the actual HP of a girl. It was in a main frame message that would display the HP about three or four times. I didn't copy the message or have debug mode that time, so that's all I still know about it.
I also noticed that the images in the Card Shop's starter deck description don't work properly. (the path should be changed to "Cartovore2" instead of "Cartovore")
